Am I a Good Candidate for Fat Dissolving Injections? What to Expect Before Your First Session

One of the most common questions clients ask before booking a fat dissolving treatment is a deceptively simple one: "Is this right for me?"

It is a good question, and the honest answer is that not everyone is. Fat dissolving injections are a clinically supported, non-surgical body contouring treatment, but they work best for a specific profile of client. Understanding where you fit before you arrive for a consultation means you can walk in informed, ask the right questions, and set realistic expectations about what LemonZest LB-1000™️ by PepGlow Aesthetics can and cannot do for you.

This guide walks through the ideal candidate profile, the contraindications that make treatment unsuitable or require medical clearance, and the pre-treatment preparation protocol that sets up every session for success.

Who Is LemonZest LB-1000™️ Actually For?

  • LemonZest LB-1000™️ is designed for adults with localised fat deposits that are resistant to diet and exercise — pockets of fat that remain stubbornly in place even when a person is at a healthy or near-healthy weight. Research into phosphatidylcholine-based lipolytic treatments, foundational to the Lemon Bottle formula, consistently demonstrates efficacy in precisely this population (Rotunda & Kolodney, Dermatol Surg., 2006; Hexsel et al., J Drugs Dermatol., 2003).

  • The ideal candidate profile includes adults aged 18 and over who are seeking non-surgical reduction of a specific, defined fat deposit, whether that is a double chin, lower abdominal fat, inner thigh fullness, upper arm heaviness, or flank rolls. Post-weight-loss clients with residual deposits and mild skin laxity are also well-suited, as the collagen-stimulating effect of LemonZest LB-1000™️ can improve skin texture alongside fat reduction (Hexsel et al., JEADV, 2009).

  • This is not a weight-loss treatment. It is a contouring treatment. Clients with a body mass index above 35 are likely to see reduced efficacy and should be advised that this intervention targets surface adipose tissue only, not the visceral or deep abdominal fat that contributes to overall body weight (Duncan & Palmer, Aesthet Plast Surg., 2008). The best outcomes come from clients who have realistic expectations and understand that results build progressively over two to four sessions, with full results visible at four to six weeks post-treatment (Salti et al., Dermatol Surg., 2008).

Absolute Contraindications: Who Must Not Be Treated

  • A full consultation and health intake is mandatory before any treatment with LemonZest LB-1000™️. The following conditions are absolute contraindications, meaning treatment must not proceed under any circumstances.

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding are absolute exclusions. The lipid metabolism alteration triggered by lipolytic treatment poses unacceptable foetal and neonatal risk. Clients with a known allergy or sensitivity to pineapple or Bromelain must also be excluded due to the risk of anaphylaxis, a risk specifically documented in the literature on Bromelain-containing formulations (Masson et al., Planta Med., 2014).

  • Active skin infection, open wounds, or active dermatitis in the treatment area are contraindicated due to the heightened infection risk associated with any injectable. Liver or kidney disease precludes treatment because the elimination of fat metabolites following lipolysis depends on hepatic and renal function; compromised clearance creates a metabolic burden the body cannot safely process (Duncan & Palmer, Aesthet Plast Surg., 2008). Diagnosed diabetes, either Type 1 or Type 2, carries dual risk: altered fat metabolism and impaired wound healing. Active autoimmune conditions and blood clotting disorders or anticoagulant therapy (including warfarin, heparin, and NOACs) are also absolute contraindications. Clients currently undergoing active cancer treatment must not be treated.

Relative Contraindications: When Physician Clearance Is Required

Some conditions do not automatically prevent treatment but require additional clinical judgement and, in many cases, clearance from the client's prescribing physician before proceeding.

Clients taking NSAIDs or aspirin should pause use for five to seven days prior to treatment, with their prescribing physician's approval, to reduce bruising and bleeding risk. A history of keloid or hypertrophic scarring warrants caution, as the collagen-stimulating inflammatory response triggered by LemonZest LB-1000™️ may worsen scarring in susceptible individuals. Thyroid disorders affect lipid metabolism and require physician clearance before proceeding (Kopera et al., J Cosmet Dermatol., 2022). Recent surgery or active inflammation near the intended treatment zone also requires clinical review before treatment is scheduled.

The contraindication checklist below provides a structured overview for clinic reference.

How to Prepare: The Pre-Treatment Protocol

Proper preparation in the days leading up to your session is not optional, it directly influences your infection risk, your comfort during treatment, and the quality of your results. Every client receives these instructions at the time of booking and again at consultation.

Two days before treatment. Begin using Hibiclens (Chlorhexidine Gluconate 4%) surgical wash on the treatment area each day. Apply it for two full minutes, scrubbing the area thoroughly, then rinse clean. This process reduces the surface bacterial load on the skin before any injectable is introduced, minimising the risk of post-procedure infection. Do not apply any lotions, oils, creams, or moisturisers to the treatment area after showering on the day of your appointment.

On the day of treatment. Eat a light meal before attending, do not arrive fasted. Drink at least 500mL of water before your session begins. Wear loose, comfortable clothing that does not press tightly across the intended treatment area. Arrive with clean, completely product-free skin in the treatment zone.

These steps are straightforward but important. The Hibiclens protocol in particular is a standard of surgical skin preparation that significantly reduces surface contamination prior to injectable procedures.

What Happens at Your Consultation

Before any treatment is administered, your treating professional will conduct a full health intake to screen for the contraindications outlined above and assess your suitability. You will discuss the specific area you wish to treat, your health history and current medications, your expectations and goals, and the number of sessions likely required to achieve your desired outcome.

This consultation is also your opportunity to ask every question you have. Understanding the mechanism, the recovery timeline, and the realistic results window, two to four weeks for initial reduction, four to six weeks for optimal results, means you can make a genuinely informed decision before committing to treatment (Salti et al., Dermatol Surg., 2008).
